Praise Poems of the Beloved
The Manqus, The Sharaf al-Anām and The Badr Mawlid
Translated by: Muhammed Muneeb Nurani
In Sunni tradition, Mawlid has been identified as the event of the Prophet's birth and the celebrations associated with it. In a general sense, on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal-the month in which the Prophet was born. Sunni muslims across the world celebrate Mawlid. The celebrations include activities venerating the magnificent events of the Prophet's birth, recitals with devotional narrations about the importance of Hubbu Rasool (love of the Prophet) and distribution of sweets and nourishments among the people. The particularities of the celebration will vary according to the local customs and rituals of the region in which the Mawlid is celebrated. Muneeb Nurani translates three prominent Malabar Mawlids- the Manqus, The Sharaf al-Anām, and The Badr Mawlid into English, aiming to introduce these Islamic devotional texts to global.
